Social Security Payment Schedule

If you receive Social Security benefits or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and would like to know when your payment will be deposited into your account each month, you’ve come to the right place. For the most part, the date on which you receive your payment depends on whether you started receiving social security benefits before or after May 1997. Here is the Social Security Payment Schedule.

If you received Social Security on or before April 30, 1997, your payment date is usually the third of the month. People eligible for both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) generally receive SSI on the first and their Social Security on the third of the month. However, if the third falls on a day when banks and credit unions are closed, then you will receive your payment a day or two earlier.

If you started receiving benefits after May 1997, then your benefit payment is made on one Wednesday of the month, depending on your birth date.

  • If your birthday falls on the 1st to the 10th of your birth month, you’ll receive your payments on the second Wednesday of each month.
  • If your birthday falls on the 11th to the 20th of your birth month, you’ll receive your payments on the third Wednesday of each month.
  • If your birthday falls on the 21st to the 31st of your birth month, you’ll receive your payments on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Note that if you are a spouse receiving survivor’s benefits, the payment date will be based on the birth date of the deceased individual upon whose work record the benefit payments are being made.

If you do not receive your benefit payment by the date expected, allow three days to pass after your payment date before you contact Social Security.

Stolen Direct Express Social Security Benefits Card

If you have your Social Security Benefits Card (Direct Express Card) stolen or lost and cannot access your social security benefits, follow the instructions below on how to get your existing card canceled and order a replacement card.

Get A Replacement Social Security Benefits Card

The first step you need to take immediately your card is lost or stolen is to call Direct Express Customer Service to inform them about the missing card. They will then go ahead and cancel the card and order a replacement. You need to call them immediately because the longer you wait, the more likely it is that someone could possibly use your card to make unauthorized purchases. Here is the number to call:

Immediately call the Direct Express® card Customer Service Department, at 1 (888) 741-1115 (toll-free).

Note that it may take a bit of effort to get a live customer service person. We have received lots of complaints from people who have lost their cards and been frustrated trying to reach customer service to report the card lost and get a new one. You can read some of those stories in the comments section of this post. You cannot afford to get frustrated by that. Your goal is to reach customer service regardless of how long it takes, because the longer you wait, the more you put your money at risk.

Once you get a representative on the phone, have them cancel your card and order you a new one.

Monitor Your Social Security Benefits Card Account Online

While you wait for your replacement card to arrive, you should monitor your Direct Express Card online to make sure that no one is making unauthorized transactions on your account. That will also confirm that the old card has indeed been canceled. If you notice any fraudulent activity on your account, call customer service again and have them look into the charges. The sooner you report any fraudulent activity on your account, the better chance you have of getting your missing social security benefits card money back.

Your replacement card should come in the mail. If you don’t receive it by the time indicated by customer service, call them again and get a status update.

We would like to hear about your experience with Direct Express Customer Service in reporting your card lost or stolen and getting a replacement card. Please comment below.

Fraudulent Charges on Direct Express Social Security Card

There is an increase in the number of incidents of fraudulent charges on Direct Express Social Security Card. This is becoming a big problem for card holders as we wrote in a recent article. So, what is really going on here? The simple answer is that fraudsters are increasingly finding a way to steal Direct Express Card Account Information and then quickly drain the funds before the cardholder can do anything about it. Cardholders then turn to Direct Express Customer Service for help, and that is where things get frustrating.

Who is to Blame for Fraudulent Charges on Direct Express?

In today’s digital world where even banks are getting hacked everyday, Direct Express cardholders should not be surprised that their accounts are being targeted by fraudsters. The government event sent out a warning to cardholders about increased incidence of phishing. Cardholders have some responsibility to protect their account information. If you need help in what to do to prevent your card and online access from being compromised, see these useful tips for Protecting Against Card Fraud from the Federal Trade Commission.

Has Money Been Stolen from Your Card?

As you can see from the above video, fraudsters are going out of their way to get your debit card information, even calling you at home. Just know that thieves are getting sophisticated and you should be careful before giving your Direct Express Card information out or clicking any link to “correct” any information on your account.

If you have money been taken stolen from your Social Security Direct Express card, you should call customer service and report the incident immediately. You will probably be asked to complete a fraud packet, which you will have to mail back to customer service. This will help them in investigating your claim and process any refunds back to your card. Note that there is no guarantee that you will be refunded for the money stolen from your card, so be sure to take some time to clearly explain what happened and prove that it was not your fault or something you did that caused the funds from your Direct Express Account to be stolen. There are many reports of cardholders being denied refunds after money was stolen from their account because it was determined that it was their fault.

Direct Express Card Fraud

If you are frustrated with Direct Express Card Fraud Investigation, you are not alone. This is a problem for many cardholders. We regularly review our blog comments to understand what our readers are talking about, especially to understand common complaints and try and help card holders find solutions to those issues or point them in the right direction. One of the growing complaints we’ve been hearing is regarding cardholders whose debit cards are hacked by fraudsters and then they literally have to go through a lot of hassle with Direct Express to get the fraud investigated and more importantly, the money returned to their card. In some cases, card holder are not reimbursed for the money stolen because they are told it is their fault that the account was compromised. This issue is causing financial hardships for those affected. Here is what we found when we looked into the issue.

Direct Express Card Fraud – Money Stolen From Card

This is how this fraud typically happens: Card holder discovers that money has been illegally spent on their card, either over a long period of time or very quickly. Since it is an unauthorized transaction, the card holder then calls Direct Express Customer Service to complain. That’s when things get interesting. If you call customer service, they will probably tell you to fill out a fraud packet and send back. This is usually mailed to you, so you have to wait about 10 business days to get this packet in the mail, which is unusually long. Some people have reported that their fraud packets never arrive and they have to call customer service again, go through the whole issue again and get another packet mailed. By this time, more than 2 weeks has passed since the incident was first reported. That’s just frustrating and annoying, especially for people whose account has been depleted by fraudsters and they need the money ASAP.

What to Expect from Direct Express Fraud Investigation

From what we have gathered, it takes Direct Express 45-90 days to complete a fraud investigation after you’ve completed the fraud packet. Any attempt to get them to speed up the process is usually unsuccessful as customer service just repeats the timeline to you over and over again. They will even tell you to borrow money to hold you over while they complete the investigation, even though there is no guarantee you will be reimbursed for the money that is taken out.

What Direct Express Says About Their Card

If you watch the promotion video above, one of the selling points of the debit card option instead of a check is the security of the card. If the card is being promoted as secure, why is it so hard to get reimbursed when it is clear that the account has been compromised and funds have been illegally taken? The promotion also says that the MONEY IS INSURED BY THE FDIC. If the money is FDIC Insured, why is it so hard to get reimbursed for fraudulent purchases? Any bank or credit card company will first put the money in the customer’s account, then do an investigation. If they find that there was indeed fraud, then the matter is resolved. If they find that the customer actually used the money and is reporting it as fraud, then they take back the money from the account. We think Direct Express should do the same, rather than putting people through a long investigation process where they are out of money and have to wait 90 days to get their money back.

As you see from the image below, the card is advertised as safer than cash. If it is safer, why it is so hard to get your money back when the money is stolen from the account?

"Direct Express Card Fraud Investigation

Here is what Direct Express says on their website about FDIC Insurance:

Yes, with the Direct Express® card, your money is FDIC-insured up to the maximum legal limit. In addition, the consumer protections required by Regulation E (12 CFR 205) and MasterCard® Zero Liability (exceptions may apply), which protect you against unauthorized use of your card when promptly reported, apply to your debit card account. Finally, if your card is lost or stolen, it will be replaced.”
